Curriculum Plans 2014-2015

We took off May and June for our summer break, using that time for some wonderful experiences:

July ushers in the oppressively hot weather here in the South, which means Mater Dei Catholic Homeschool is ushering in its new academic year. It's not like we enjoy playing outside after about nine in the morning!

For the third year in the row, I offer--for whatever it's worth!--our curriculum choices for readers' perusal.

Second Grade: John

Mathematics
Right Start Math (finishing up last year's book)
Likely then transitioning to Singapore Math
Supplementing with Miquon Math

Reading/Phonics
All About Reading

Spelling
All About Spelling

English
I was an English literature major so am going to continue reading literature and doing the analysis with my children as I've been doing. I plan to consult Dr. John Senior's Good Books List, which looks remarkably similar to what we have been reading anyway. (Also, see "The Death of a Christian Culture" by Dr. Senior and Angelicum Academy Good Books Program.)

(English Lessons through Literature (a new element for us which combines literature, reading, grammar, writing, and penmanship) One week into school, I am removing my recommendation for this curriculum. We didn't examine it closely enough and there are too many titles with a potentially strong anti-Christian symbolism, which just aren't worth reading in these tender years when there is so much great literature out there.)

Prima Latina (we are starting over, last year being too early to start)

No formal science curriculum yet. We plan to read living science books, such as The Story Book of Science, as well as encourage John to do experiments on his own, such as TOPS Experiments and Snaps Circuits, Jr.

  1. Yay, exciting! I just love the beginning of the school year; fresh curriculum, a fresh new attitude full of resolve (on the part of the mother teacher, sometimes the students), and lots of hope. I hope its a great year for you!
