Happy 15-month birthday, Mary! I decided to do a "birthday" post today because my experience with John and watching other toddlers is that 15 months often brings a marked shift from baby behavior to toddler behavior. It's a very interesting time!
Last night Mary grabbed a clean fork off the table and began eating with it. I was busy with John at the moment, so by the time I glanced at Mary, she was successfully spearing her ravioli and getting it into her mouth, and then she was off to try to spear peas.
Like clockwork, Mary has been exhibiting some new toddler behaviors. Just in the last few days she has been slapping me across the face when I'm redirecting her from a dangerous behavior. Thankfully she is so attached to me that I can easily discipline her by setting her on the ground, saying, "No hitting Mama" in a firm tone, and then she bursts into awful tears at our "separation." I remember when John hit 15 months, I suddenly felt like everything I had learned about motherhood so far was now useless to me and I had to learn all new techniques. I know I'll be much calmer about the transition this time around!
I compiled a list of Mary's communication abilities and was rather surprised. At 18 months old, John had 20 signs and 24 spoken words (which I think was typical/average), but at only 15 months, Mary has 20 signs and 7 words. Maybe I'm knowing how to teach signing better this time, although I feel like I've hardly been doing it.
