Thursday 7/3 in California

John is still waking up at an entirely uncivilized hour, so it was very easy to meet my dad for breakfast at my favorite nearby truckers' cafe at 7:00 a.m. Today we tried out the kiddie pool in the backyard. John had great fun running around the yard. During our four months living in our temporary apartment, John has blossomed into wanting and needing to run around a yard every day, but I've had nowhere convenient to take him. I'm really excited about moving into our new home in a few weeks, which has a great enclosed backyard with a flat grassy area as well as exciting trails through the wooded edges of the yard.

My mom and stepdad have a cat named Nibbs who has no tail but six toes on each foot. She has never been subjected to a little kid, poor thing. John is fascinated and spends much energy daily seeking the kitty. These photos show him running around the yard making the sign for WHERE and shouting "meow!" (He has not yet combined two words, but he regularly combines a word and a sign.)

Neil was raking fallen apples and John joined him, using a small, kiddie-sized broom. And no one even lost an eye from being stabbed with the wooden handle!
