Cute photo of John dead to the world:
In the mid-morning, we visited my sister's family at their home. My niece Maddie is now a big four years old! John had great fun playing with her big kid toys.
We went to the Carmichael city Independence Day parade for about an hour. It was cute, but way too loud for my nature or John's. I have always hated loud noises! The parade was led by two fire trucks and three police cars, driving about one mile per hour and stopping intermittently. So, for an extended period of time, all five vehicles were right in front of us, 20 feet away, with all five sirens blaring at full volume! I hated that part and John didn't even cry: he shut down completely, like a zombie. I walked us briskly through a parking lot as far away as I could, where I found a cadre of mothers holding their hands over their babies' ears.
After the parade, I joined Amy, my maid of honor, for lunch at a local family ice creamery, which brings me fond memories from childhood. One of my distinct memories from childhood is when my friend Ginga and I, maybe at age 10, went alone to the ice creamery after school. When the check came, we were $1.56 short! We panicked, sure we'd be sent to jail. She and I conferred and planned our way out of this devilish scrape. Ultimately, we sent Ginga, braver than me, to walk outside to the pay phone, call her mom, and ask her to come with the extra money. Our hearts were pounding as we waited for her, but all was well that ended well.
