Mary's 8th Birthday

Happy birthday to our first daughter Mary Genevieve, who is eight years old today!

Our family is so blessed by our girl who is sparkling (and sparky!), bright and interested, and growing to be such a joyful helper in the family. I enjoy very much how, after nearly eight years of consistently being a night owl, Mary is now one of my early birds, and wakes in the wee hours to go on long walks with me so we can talk. She is my ever more competent helper and a good student.

We enjoyed eating a quick birthday breakfast (Fannie Farmer buttermilk scones) and opening Mary's family gifts before John and Mary were whisked off to a music competition and were gone much of the day.

In the evening, we celebrated with two other families who joined us for dinner. Just for my own fun, I tallied up that the 15 kids were ages 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7/8?, 8, 8, 9, 10, and 10. Plus the other two mamas are pregnant. :)  So much abounding life and joy!

The simple menu was:

  • crudites and little snackies
  • salad with various toppings
  • delivery wings
  • delivery pizza
  • Chris' wonderful sauteed mushrooms
  • bakery birthday cake

A couple hours before our friends showed up, I worried that we hadn't planned any formal games: would the kids have any fun?

Well, they didn't even pass through the house upon arriving, but all made a beeline for the back yard where they spent the entire dark and quite chilly evening playing. They only came indoors to retrieve food because they were making their own fun nonstop for three hours.
