Potty Update: 12 Hours

This is a quick update about 12 hours after we bought two plastic potties for John. I put one in the upstairs hall bathroom and the other is still sitting in the living room.

I'd like to get into a routine of offering for John to sit on his potty after waking from each nap because that is a time he's likely to eliminate and I need to change his diaper anyway. So, I tried yesterday after his afternoon nap. I let him stand up in the bathroom while I removed his shorts and diaper, just like he was a big boy (instead of lying him down like a baby). Then I said, "Do you want to sit on the potty?" and I busied myself at the sink so I wasn't hovering. All casual-like. Well, he stood there seriously, peed all over the linoleum, then sat down on the potty for a minute, then stood up and peed all over the linoleum again! I just laughed because I didn't know what to say! Next time I'll follow my friend Elaine's suggestion that I say something cheerful like, "That's pee pee! Pee pee goes in the potty."

Then this morning we had an even more exciting development. I was on the computer when I saw John sit fully clothed on his potty in the living room. He called me over and when I got there, he made the sign for POTTY, then pretended to wipe himself clean. I just encouraged and went back to my business. It never occurred to me to check him but a few minutes later I discovered he had had a bowel movement in his diaper. I am almost positive he did so while sitting on the potty because he always gives me the POTTY sign when he is going to have a BM and he only gave me that sign while sitting on the seat. So extremely exciting! Now I know to check him next time.

This is kind of fun!

  1. To date - i've gotten Charlie to go on the potty [#2] about 5 or 6 times. He'll now come to me with this adorable distressed look and i just *know* what he's saying to me and he mumbles. I'll ask him if he needs to go poopey and he'll pat his bottom and once even pointed to the bathroom.

Let me just clarify that i'm really not *trying* to potty train my almost 18mo, i just started training the just turned 3yo - who is doing quite well. He's just seeming to be able to communicate that need to me- oh, and he likes to flush the potty!

    Good luck with John!
