Eating Cereal

John really likes All Bran Bran Buds and Flake cereals (which is a good thing, considering I can't yet get any fruit or vegetable fiber into his body!). Yesterday morning I was so impressed that he ate one-quarter of an entire bagel followed by two bowls of bran flakes! He ate his cereal painstakingly with a spoon. Maybe (probably) such a video is boring for others, but I'm still quite charmed by watching him eat like a big boy. And, yes, that is a sippy cup of (lightly chocolate-flavored) milk on John's tray; although John will drink milk in his cereal bowl, he won't drink it in a cup yet.

  1. Hey Katherine,

I was thinking about John and his distaste for wet things like fruit. (and don't ask why I am spending much of my day thinking about these things LOL) and I wondered if you tried something like grapes which are dry on the outside. Even when cut in half they are still mostly dry. Also did you try berries?

And a funny note I was at my SIL's house the other day and her almost 3 year old was eating cheerios. He had two bowls..one with the cheerios and one with the milk. He would spoon some cheerios into his mouth and then spoon the milk in separate. It was adorable. I guess he doesn't like soggy cereal!

  2. Katherine,

The video is so cute! Carli just hits at her food when I give her a spoon or fork. She prefers using her fingers. I assume she will learn to scoop food up one day with a fork or spoon.

Hope you are feeling better! Are you showing yet / in maternity clothes yet? When is your due date?

  3. I'm totally excited by the fact that John uses a spoon, actually! Most kids I've seen prefer to use their fingers, which makes a total mess. And because I'm kind of a neat freak, I was wondering how I might be able to encourage Theo to actually use utensils when the time comes for him to eat solids. So I'm really heartened to see that your boy seems to really like using them--hoping Theo will feel the same!

  4. Jamie: Yes, I've tried grapes, of course slicing them in quadrants vertically for safety. He says they are "thhbbbt!" We've tried all manner of berries too. Today he rejected apple sauce again.

  5. Carli: I'm due at the end of November/early December. I'm not showing per se and am still below my pre-pregnancy weight, but I'm now uncomfortable in regular clothing. So I'm wearing my stretchy knit skirts and searching for some more to buy. I did haul out a few maternity tops in my smaller size (not the size I wear at the end of pregnancy), which I've been wearing this week.

  6. Cathleen,

Well, sorry to break it to you, but John never allowed me to feed him with a spoon or even my hand. (I'd have to place the Cheerio on my palm so he could pick it up.) So, he self-fed with his fingers all these months. Not that he was succeeding in eating, but he's been handling food and throwing it all over the floor for about 11 months now, making all kinds of fabulous messes.

One thing I found with him is that he was never really fond of plastic, colorful imitations of adult utensils and dishes. He has really blossomed when given metal utensils (small) and a little glass bowl. And we have him in a booster seat attached to a chair, not in a separate high chair, the latter of which I always felt took up a huge foot print of space and really separates the child from the family table. But, John's recent blossoming could well just be a function of age.
