Independence Day 2022

On the Friday prior, we attended a Charlotte Symphony pops concert and a municipal fireworks show in Kannapolis, a small town an hour north. It was so delightful and reminded me very much of the small town fireworks of my youth. The speeches were 100% patriotic. We were able to sit on adjoining picnic blankets with friends, too!

On Independence Day itself, we enjoyed (as always) the neighborhood parade, even if we are now at the stage of requiring participation from some kiddos.

A meditation for me in three Independence Days!

July 2020: Thomas got home that day from having his first round of chemotherapy inpatient at the hospital and felt too sick to participate in fireworks, so I sat with him while he watched his siblings from the upstairs window.

July 2021: Thomas had been home for three months after his tremendous ordeal. He was almost at his skinniest and lowest weight. He was able to join us for the neighborhood parade, but he was still very sick and weak, so we had him drive his electric truck.

July 2022: Thomas has gained six pounds and two inches plus is much stronger. On our way to the neighborhood parade, he pulled his little brother in the wagon!
