Some of those look like their carriers are held on with rope or string (particularly noting the woman at the ironing board). Talk about "ouch!" Talk about ingenuity! I am oh so thankful for the modern twist to the carriers and slings.
The mom hauling a ton of wood with baby dangling off her front is particularly impressive.
We have the book A Ride on Mother's Back http://www.amazon.com/Ride-Mothers-Back-Carrying-around/dp/0152008705/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302271757&sr=8-1
I love this. I'm still wearing 27# Jamie in my Ergo...it's SO much easier for me to get errands and chores done that way (even though he's been able to walk since he was 10 mo).
Although I suspect this (and hauling 140# of scuba gear on my back) has contributed to my recent plantar fasciitis diagnosis. :)
