You Know He's a Southern Boy When . . .
A couple of weeks ago, we were driving through the neighborhood when we passed a gentleman doing his yard work. John gasped from the back seat and exclaimed to his daddy and me: "That man did not wave at me!" We explained that perhaps the man had not seen John, but John defended, "No! I saw him look at me with his eyes, but he did not wave!"
I found it hilarious because I remember distinctly coming from the cool-tempered West where strangers "leave each other alone" and certainly don't wave. When I moved to Georgia, I perceived that all these "strangers" (my new neighbors) were constantly waving at me. It was so bizarre to have a stranger wave at me and smile, I'd wonder if I met that person before because why else would that person say 'hello' and maybe even ask how I was, where I was from, what church I attended?
Clearly our boy is growing up in a different culture!
Too funny! Yep, every time I go for a walk, I am constantly waving at people as they drive by- to be friendly & neighborly, you know-- and half wave back and half don't. "Yankees," I think when they don't wave back. :P
ReplyDeleteWhen children are learning to be polite, it really is tragic when the adults they expect will be polite, as well, are not. Poor fella!
ReplyDeleteI was a little creeped out by all the friendliness too at first. lol
