Today I began poking through my sewing supplies to see what I had and was able to assemble what I think is a really neat collection of coordinated fabrics and accouterments. Finally, all those scraps from finished and unfinished projects came in handy! The base fabric is an upholstery fabric with an angel design.
I used blue felt and a see-through ribbon with an interesting crinkly feel to create a pocket in which hides a round pillow on a ribbon. The round pillow is made of the same angel upholstery fabric, but in beige instead of blue. I stuffed it with popcorn kernels for an interesting feel mixed with lavender for a lovely scent.
I created little doors with buttons for "doorknobs," inside of which is hiding a little bug (prefabricated, which I sewed on by hand).
I sewed the zipper on to blue felt so there would be something soft and different to feel inside when the zipper is opened. I attached a laminated holy card and St. Benedict medal to a ribbon and a prefabricated felt flower and button. I sewed upholstery edging on to the border.
I hung a flap for hanging over the front of the airplane tray, onto which I sewed two pockets. A child could put perhaps crayons or Matchbox cars in there.
I am the most beginner of seamstresses and the project took me two to three hours, with a toddler and preschooler at my feet. I am very excited to use it next time we fly, whenever that is.
Katherine! This is just beautiful, and my goodness, I do feel like you are superwoman for finishing it with John and Mary underfoot! :-)
ReplyDeleteThat looks very cool!! I like your little personal touches like the front pockets and felt under the zipper. The holy card is a great idea. And the upholstery edging gives it such a finished look!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Just gorgeous! You could start an ebay business in your spare time ;-) I LOVE the fabric!

ReplyDeletemy sister made one of my kids a "key ring" of holy cards. using laminated holy cards, punch a hole in the upper left corner and then put them all on a pretty key chain. it'll keep them busy all the while gazing at holy heroes!

Katherine: you need to sell these online. Maybe on ETSY? I will be the first buyer!
ReplyDeleteKatherine: do you mind if I put a link to your blog on my blog?
ReplyDeleteEverybody: Thank you for all the kind comments! I'm halfway through sewing the second airplane tray cover I had in mind, so I'll post about that when it's done.
ReplyDeleteMarina: Sure, you can link to my blog. Thanks for asking!
