Decorating Cookies

I thought it could be nice to start a family tradition of decorating cookies at Christmas. On Christmas Eve, we baked gingerbread cookies (my first time, they turned out tasty).
It turns out that our son who will eat literally almost nothing likes eating flour (mixed with spices, but no sugar!). I thought it was kind of gross, so thought about stopping him, but then I figured that he was getting some calories and, as far as I know, raw flour is harmless.

After Mass on Christmas day, we decorated cookies. It turns out that John is too young for such an activity. He doesn't have the ability to delay gratification for a greater good. He wanted to eat all the cookies right this instant. Even though we let him eat cookies while decorating, it wasn't enough because he wanted all the cookies. He ended up weeping and was very upset, so ultimately he watched Curious George in the other room while we decorated. Maybe next year John will enjoy the process more.

John enjoying his helicopter-shaped cookie. Let's hope he's not allergic to artificial colors!

(We used to decorate cookies like that during our family's annual Easter picnic...always great fun!)

  3. My older son and I decorated cookies Christmas Eve too! He did enjoy sampling the frosting a little, but he was into spreading it on the cookies as well. I, too, avoid those artificial colors. Yuck! At least it's only once a year...maybe by next Christmas I'll have a more natural alternative. The cookies look great!
