My Little Complainer at Dinner

Our sweet boy has become so much more expressive these days. He's added interesting consonants to his babbling. We think his "nyeah nyeah" sound has evolved to "da da." If John is in a good mood, all I have to do is give him the right look and he bursts into laughter. Plus he is so ticklish now! Here is a photo of John simply being sweet and crawling up my leg:

John enjoys sitting down to dinner and trying to eat his food (tonight: spinach and cheese ravioli and broccoli), but he only lasts about five minutes. It's not like Chris and I sit a long time at dinner, maybe 10 minutes, but John makes those second five minutes pretty irritating. Here are a series of photos of him quite willfully complaining at me to hurry up this evening. You can imagine a grating soundtrack.

  1. Drinking straws and ice cubes (not necessarily together) have helped me get through those times. Also one of those suction cup toys that attaches to the high chair tray provides lengthy entertainment.
John is just precious even when he's mad.

(I also liked your idea of a small amount of water on the tray from a few posts back)

  2. I love the look on the last picture!! Haha! What a doll! Charlie, when he's kind of "had it" will be whiny and I'll bug him and he'll laugh a bit w/his cry mixed in! It's just so cute...I absolutely love this age!!

  4. Wow, he is SO active! Always needs to be on the go... he can't even stand to be still for a whole dinnertime! That is hilarious. Christina is the opposite. Sometimes when I get the kids down from their seats and wash them up after dinner I get a little distracted and a few minutes later, remember I have left Christina sitting in her booster seat. I go back and she is just waiting there, maybe banging on the tray. She is so content. I think maybe you should be glad this is your first baby! :-) And likewise I am glad to have such a quiet, easily pacified little baby for my 4th... It's amazing how their personalities show so early. Think John is choleric? This kid of yours will be RUNNING within 4 months, I predict.

  5. I love the expressions! Isn't it too funny? I always described that time when they were unhappy that I had to eat as, "Hey mom, it's all about me, remember?" Children do love to have undivided attention!

  6. Sarah: Yes, John is amazingly active when I don't have him confined in a wrap or Ergo. He always has to be on the go. At night, he falls asleep by crawling in circles on the bed continuously until--BONK--he suddenly stops and is asleep, as if his batteries have run out. The reason he often has to nap in my Ergo is that even while asleep, he must be moving. I'm not going to bet against you about John running within four months!
