Day 29

Today was a quiet day with many adjustments being made to get Thomas as strong as possible.

His drain output has dwindled to what I as a lay person call negligible. Surgery is happy.

Getting the fluid off his body via dialysis went so well that they went a little too negative and had to put back fluid. He still needs some pleural effusion off Thomas's left lung, but I don't think it's too bad.

We made adjustments to the various combination and timing of medications to begin the weaning process.

His blood pressure was too low so the above adjustments helped bring his blood pressure back up.

I ended up going home for four hours to eat dinner with my kids (so grateful for the meal delivered to us by a loving friend!), organize Christmas gifts, make Rice Krispy Treats, and put the little boys to bed. A lovely woman dropped off a kit of ingredients to make these fun green Rice Krispy Treats shaped like Christmas trees: we did the first steps tonight, so tomorrow the gang will cut them into shapes and stick in the pretzel "tree trunks."

As I left, Joseph (7) insisted I take along his Christmas gift to Thomas. I have put it on my little prayer table in our PICU room. I truly cannot fathom my joy when our sweet boy is not only awake but strong enough to sit up in bed and use his little fingers to tear open the tissue paper. He has a long way to go to get there.

  1. Thomas and you and the family are in our thoughts and prayers very, very often and will continue to be. May the Lord and our Lady continue to give you strength and comfort.
