Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden: Homeschool Day

Homeschool Day October 2019 at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden

We attended six lessons lasting 25 minutes in perfect fall weather and were so impressed with the teachers' way of presenting machines and physics to young people.

Make Your Own Catapult and Trebuchet Launch

Create your own catapult using everyday simple household materials. Use your catapult to test your accuracy and distance! Afterwards, use a small trebuchet to launch flying objects.

Incline Planes and Wedges

Inclined planes are used to lower and raise objects but are also capable of holding objects together. A wedge is a double inclined plane! Create your own inclined plane and test the usefulness of a wedge.

Wheels and Axles

Learn about one of the world's greatest innovations: wheels and axles. Test your strength and move objects with the help of this simple machine.

Screws

Learn about the importance of a screw and how they helped throughout history. Test your knowledge with an Archimedes screw!

Levers

Use your critical thinking skills to move heavy materials without exhausting your resources (yourself!). Learn about fulcrums, load, and force in order to develop a more efficient system for moving objects.

Pulleys

Who invented and first used the pulley system? Along with the wheel, the pulley system was discovered, not actually invented. Learn about the components of a pulley system by using one to complete tasks.

How I love this boy!
