After early morning relaxation together, we met Dad at 8:00 at the famous Davis Farmers' Market, played on wonderful playground, ate pastries for breakfast, and walked the Community Gardens full of beautiful native plants. It was surprisingly brisk with winds at gusts of 30 mph.
The praying mantises were hatching while we were in town. |
I avoided taking photos of the various homeless men sleeping in the beautiful park.
Dad then drove us up Highway 113 for a tour of the five dozen trees, mostly oaks, that he has purchased, planted, and must water one or two times weekly before for about three years until they can draw all their own water. He does all this as a dedicated member of TREE Davis and its President for decades. I'm so proud of my dad and his tree work!
Dad then had to go put in a few hours of work, so the kids and I decided spontaneously to visit the Sacramento Zoo at 11:00 a.m., also giving David a chance to nap in the car for half an hour.
Walking through exquisite William Land Park and golf course toward the zoo, we had to avoid cutting through the grass because of the homeless sleeping along the way.

In the afternoon, we rested at the rental house, finished watching "Sense and Sensibility," and did laundry.
Bearing cake and flowers, at 4:00 we met at the home of family friend Lynn for a family dinner and birthday celebration for my niece Maddie turning 15. Lynn's garden is so beautiful and a joy to spend time in.
John played piano (no pics) and Mary her concerto on violin.
David was at that point drunk with fatigue--not asleep till almost 9:00 p.m., two hours past bedtime even at home, let alone in California having woken at 4:30 and had only brief a car nap.
Back in California, the crew sure was missing Mama and their siblings. One sibling claimed even to have lost an appetite for food.
