The alarm buzzed at 4:30 a.m. for a 7:45 flight on which John (12), Mary (10), David (21 months), and I would be jetting to California.
The little ones shed many tears on the drive to the airport and somebody requested we pray the rosary on the drive (which we did). They are unaccustomed to Mama leaving for even one evening, let alone for six days!
Once we got through security, we bought breakfast, including this chocolate muffin for David. The day was starting off well.
Once we got through security, we bought breakfast, including this chocolate muffin for David. The day was starting off well.
The first leg of the trip went well, particularly because we upgraded to extra leg room and it lasted only two hours.
The first leg was lengthened due to bad weather in Chicago, making the layover so short that we had to run and skip bathrooms and food.
The second layover was more challenging, lasting four and a half hours and with no extra leg room (so my knees were touching the seat ahead, and I'm only 5'7" so I don't know what even average men do sitting there). The toddler threw a huge tantrum when we boarded, so I suspected he was tired: He nursed for all of 30 seconds before passing out asleep in my arms, where I held him for two hours, no matter how much my right arm hurt from being numb-asleep.
Eventually he woke and what followed was two and a half hours of him shrieking joyfully. We watched "Beyond the Mask," which is not morally objectionable, but was not my favorite and will not be joining our regular rotation.

Meanwhile, on the way home from the airport, Chris took the three children to breakfast at a diner, making it the last time I say, "It's okay, we can leave the little boys in their pajamas because it's not like they'll be getting out of the van anywhere."
Dad met us at the Sacramento airport with a sign to help us with luggage via the bus to the rental car agency.
The rental car line was only six people long, yet took a full hour! We said goodbye to Dad and drove our rental car to settle in to the fabulous Air BNB Chris had selected for me.
We were one tuckered-out crew, but then we had to go grocery shopping for some basics, which--to this West Coast girl--included It's-It ice cream sandwiches, which are not sold east of the Mississipi. The children thought that three boxes was too much and I scoffed at them.
Back at the house, the baby was asleep for the night at 6:00 p.m. and then I glorlied in staying up with my big kids to play puzzles and games. I'm the parent who is taking care of the wee ones while the big ones have fun with Dad, so this was such a joy to me.
I think we probably went to sleep around 8:00 that first night.
