I am loving the new aspects of having three children older than the baby: I made breakfast at leisure while the children cared for the baby in the adjoining den: Mary said she made Joseph as "palace" and was reading to him. |

At four months old, Joseph graduated to the bouncy seat! |

Before formally homeschooling, I used to read and read and read to John and Mary. However, I have noticed since John began Kindergarten that my reading of literature dropped off because I was using all my focus-on-the-children time to do Official Schooling. In order to remedy this problem, I began picking a selection of books on Sunday when I do my school planning, placing them in a basket, and reading one or two of them to the children each day. This has been working well. |

Mary often copies words within her field of vision, so she will hand me pictures like this one, which is of a castle labelled: "GRACO Pack Play." |

As I was teaching school on Monday, I glanced over at Margaret, who had obtained paper and the bag of crayons all by herself. She had settled herself in a desk and was diligently working on something--I thought drawing a picture--for at least 15 minutes. The concentration on her face! I thought to myself, 'Ah, little Margaret is increasing her attention span! She's turning a corner! Think of what preschool activities she'll be able to do next school year!' Of course, I saw the reality when I approached the desk and saw she hadn't been drawing but assiduously shredding all the paper off the crayons. At least she was working on fine motor skills, right? |
Speaking of Margaret (26 months), she has recently written a little ditty that she sings throughout the house, which I think epitomizes her age:
"I want my own,
I want my own,
not Mary's . . ."

"Four Things We Should Never Say"
At least she was only shredding the paper off the crayons! When Simon gets a hold of a crayon it is GUARANTEED he will scribble on the wall with it, then come run and find me with consternation saying 'Uh oh! What a mess!" sigh. Love the "Graco Pack Play" :)
ReplyDeleteElaine: That is so funny about Simon! I have been remarkably fortunate with these first three children when it came to drawing on walls. I leave them full access to crayons and markers, I've been so spoiled. I certainly expect for my luck to run out one of these days and I'll get a kid who is a major graffiti artist.
ReplyDeleteLovely book selections. You have an amazing library.
ReplyDeletePriscilla: Thanks! I started with a good seed because (as a nearly only child) I took all my childhood books with me when I moved out. Then I began collecting children's books at used book sales (like library close-out sales) from John's babyhood, getting a lot for pennies on the dollar.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I'm getting ready to finally get rid of all the twaddle when the girls are away at their grandparents. I have to dig out my childhood books as I have a pretty good selection of classics from E.B. White and such. And I now gift each child a book for each special occassion; that's an idea I got from you.
ReplyDeleteAfter I saw your basket I went straight to the library and placed a lot of them on hold. You should post your book baskest more often.
Priscilla:
ReplyDeleteThat's not a half bad idea, thank you! Maybe I could make it something I remember to do snap a photo of the weekly book basket on Sunday nights when it is full.
Yes, just last night while the children were sleeping I went through some bookshelves on search for twaddle to go to Goodwill!
Looks like we just missed the library spring book sale.

I don't see a list to get on so that I'm aware of the book sale in advance next year, so I went to the CM Library Friends page on Facebook and "liked" it, in hopes I'll see the notice for the next sale.
Also, at homeschool conferences, check out the parents' used book tables for great, cheap books.
Clara also loves peeling crayons! Maybe it is something about that age...
