There But for the Grace of God Go I

This woman’s experience may not make sense to those who haven’t walked alongside their child existing suspended between life and death, but I’m betting cancer parents will resonate with it. During Thomas’s entire arc of treatment (even the ‘easy’ months of chemo) I could not fall asleep without a TV show playing. Then while in the hospital for 132 days, I lived on gummy candy (and still needed the TV to sleep). Those were my drugs. A less experienced, smug me would have judged this womanly harshly for her vodka, but you won’t find me condemning her now. There but for the grace of God go I.

When My Child Got Cancer, I Couldn't Cope. Then I Started Smuggling Vodka Into The Hospital.
