Our family experienced a wonderful Saturday at River Fest hosted by The Isabella Santos Foundation! This was an event generously gifted to families who have experienced pediatric cancer: we spent a day out on the river experiencing hiking and boating guided by professionals. Thomas declared, "This is the best day of my life!" There were families there whose children are NED but there were also families there with kids in active treatment. The event concluded with ISF hosting lunch for all of us.
Mark Saturday's calendar as the day I believe is the first day I've ever met a cancer mom in person--thanks to the isolation protocols inspired by COVID. I'm so grateful for a return of in-person events so I can finally start to "meet my tribe."
If you can remember on Tuesday when you're bustling about your regular, stressed-out life, please say a prayer for a handsome teenage young man I got to meet who is going to undergo brain surgery to remove his tumor this Tuesday. When I think my life is hard, let me please envision him and so many others to give me perspective. Life's sufferings are not a competition, but still we can benefit from remembering that running late, having a mountain of laundry, or having sassy mouthed kids who won't do their math is not handing one's child over for brain surgery.
