My Entourage (Day #65 Phase I)

Monday, Day #65 Phase I of Reopening

We request continued prayers for my husband's mother D. She is recovering, now in a long-term, acute care facility, from COVID-19 and hasn't been home in seven weeks. D. is off the ventilator and sitting up. Next goal: learn how to speak with her temporary tracheotomy. Praise God!

I can't go on a brisk exercise walk without what could be described in the most positive sense as an entourage. As I loop the cul-de-sac and up to the stop sign and back over and over again to reach my mileage goal, the little people join me to enthusiastically tell me about everything wonderful: the cockroach discovered on our driveway, the latest book being read, a rock picked up from the ground ("You carry it, Mama."), a fight that needs negotiating, anything and everything. I could feel stressed and frustrated about it, but I try-try-try in every moment to embrace their love for me and know that these days will be gone all too soon.

Of all the things they wanted to tell me about on my exercise walk, one was the discovery of a dead baby bird. A sweet burial at the base of the Virgin Mary statue ensued. And all before breakfast!

Thomas (4-3/4) has been begging for piano lessons, so today he had his first one with big brother John. We shall see if it grows into something regular!

I had to dig out some poorly planted shrubs that are huge, sun-loving plants which had been planted in deep shade, and thus were scraggling and reaching. I attempted to transplant the first shrub, figuring that I had nothing to lose but I might gain a free shrub. Boy, that was some workout for this mama!

The most exciting moment of our day was when John's new-to-him camera arrived! Our 13-year-old has been taking many free photography classes online and practicing his hobby with some of our old cameras. He really wanted a camera with detachable lenses (all of ours are fixed-lens: is that the right way to say it?), so he spent weeks researching options, searching on the used market, and ultimately purchased an excellent camera, two lenses, and a carrying case for pennies on the dollar from a man selling his deceased father's goods. We guided John carefully as he spent some of his hard earned lawn mowing money and are so proud of him in this wholesome pursuit!
