I do believe it is a Grifola frondosa or Hen of the woods. If so it is quite edible, but since I'm not a mycologist I think I would just feast my eyes.
Anita: You know, I don't actually know how long it took this one to pop up, although I think it was quite rapid. In our yard, we do regularly get a mushroom that is at least 6 inches across that pops up literally overnight. I see those in our whole neighborhood, especially after rainstorms in summer.
