Getting back to normal . . . On Saturday, I took the children to the wonderful farmers' market and we picked up some delicious pulled pork and homemade hamburger buns, a goat cheese and onion frittata, and strawberry shortcakes to celebrate Chris returning home after six days.
We bought a new "pet," just about the maximum-care pet I can take on during this season of life: a Venus fly trap! The gentleman who sells these interesting plants taught us all about how to care for them best so they can live two to three years. Apparently in our climate, they live outdoors in full sun with wet feet (by setting them in a container of water), and overwinter outside beneath pine straw. He taught us never to 'tease' the fly trap because each set of leaves has the energy to open and close only three times in its life before that pair of leaves shrivels up to black and dies.

The Venus fly trap is living in our bird bath outside our kitchen window where we can watch it.
We bought wonderful homemade doughnuts . . .
. . . and listened to a classical guitarist and violinist . . .
. . . our little Mary musician sneaking up as close as she could to listen with rapt attention. Speaking of music, I made some short recordings of John and Mary on piano, as I enjoy having snapshot recordings of their progress over the months.
At the farmers' market, I bought (way too many) strawberries in order to make freezer jam, which we do about once per year. Then it was off to the grocery store for ridiculous amounts of sugar and pectin.
The wagon train of carts drew many stares. |
Two helpers made the cutting go quite quickly. |
Half the strawberries canned equals eight pints |
I loved the piano clips, they are both doing so well! And Mary is just such a natural, not even looking at the music, plus I just love "Ode to Joy".
