Our First Visit to Dan Nicholas Park

Maybe every one else around here knows about Dan Nicholas Park, but we've lived here for six years now and only just learned of it from a family with nine children who told us that it is a great recreational spot for large families.

We visited on Saturday and, indeed, it is great for large families! This county-run park has no entrance fee, and the cost for tickets to any given activity ranges from fifty cents to about one dollar. We ate lunch at the hot dog concession stand by the lake, combining concession food and a cooler of PBJs from home.

Activities at Dan Nicholas include paddle boats, feeding the ducks, fishing, playing miniature golf, playing at a huge playground (about a dozen playgrounds in one), a petting zoo, an exotic zoo, a train ride, a carousel, a splash pad, and likely more I am forgetting. And, inexplicably, the crowds were few even on a Saturday in June.

Sneaking up on ducks

Feeding ducks

Feeding turtles and carp

Catching tiny frogs

Spying a water snake

Margaret enjoying her very first ride on a carousel

A wonderful and very tiring time was had by all! This would be a fun place to start a tradition of going a couple of times per year during the moderate weather seasons of fall and spring.

  1. Thanks! I needed a reminder! We have had this on our to do list for quite some time but still haven't made it out there!
