The other night during bedtime routine with the baby and the girls, John approached and asked me if I'd teach him how to sew buttons. Being just a little bit busy (ha ha!), I said no, I didn't have time at that moment, and he skittered off to do I-didn't-know-what with the hour he gets to stay up later than the girls.
When the others were settled, I went to find John to kiss him good night and found him on the guest bed with my button collection and his own little sewing kit spread out: he had taught himself to sew on buttons. They're good and strong too, so I told him he could definitely do my button mending on clothing!

John sewed this quilt on my machine with my guidance. He had sewn on four buttons when I took the picture, but the quilt is now festooned with buttons! |
Of course, Mary wanted to learn to hand sew and I was inclined to teach her, especially in light of the comments by the farmer at Old Sturbridge Village! I finally got around to it today and she sewed her first pillow all by herself. So much fun!

And in other fun news, John started his chess class at our parish homeschooling co-op! And today he turned around and taught his four-year-old sister the basics of the game. I wondered why they were playing so quietly upstairs so went to investigate and found them hunched over a chess board--I'm lovin' it!
