Obligatory First Solids Post

I gave Joseph a taste of solids: whole vanilla yogurt, just what I happened to have open in the refrigerator.

He's gone from 6 lbs 5 oz to 20 lbs on nursing alone, so he's doing wonderfully after his rough start. He's six months old now and hasn't shown any interest in solids yet. I have found the signs of readiness for solids as espoused by La Leche League to be very useful, and I'd like to see Joseph sitting up better and using a pincer grasp before I try solids with much vigor.

First I gave him a spoon with a smear of yogurt on it and just let him hold and explore it to see what he would do. I'm a fan of mostly self-led weaning and self-led solids when that works out (which is not always). Joseph never put the spoon in his mouth.

So after his playing with the spoon for about 15 minutes, I put it in his mouth several times and he gave me the classic baby sign of distaste along with clamping his mouth shut.

'Really, Mom? Let's not try that again too soon. I'm happy the way things are.'

Since Joseph had a tongue tie like his brother, I'll breathe a sigh of relief when I see him eating solids well. But for now I'm not at all concerned, as none of my babies have started to eat even the majority of their calories from solids till well over a year old.

  1. That second picture is priceless! How dare you try to poison him with that nasty yogurt! :)

My first two kids loved all manner of food REALLY early on...but now they are picky eaters. But Alice, she wasn't at all interested until just recently (almost 8mo), and now she literary climbs up my body to reach whatever food I may be attempting to enjoy.
