Life Vests: Serving Dual Purposes

I don't know about other families, but in ours we have to lock up the life vests. The children find them anyway, drag them out, and wear them around the house for days.

This week, we borrowed an infant sized (under 30 pounds) life vest from friends to use for Margaret, which means, of course, she's been wearing it around the house for days. It has a flap that comes up behind the toddler's head so that the head will be kept buoyant out of the water until rescue.

Turns out that such a life vest is also pretty good "sibling protection" until parental rescue, such as--for a random example--if one's sister is really mad at the toddler's annoying antics so she lies in wait until the toddler walks onto a blanket, then yanks said blanket out from under the toddler so she slips fast and smacks the back of her head on the wood floor. But instead of a 'smack', there is a padded 'thud' and the toddler is trapped like a beetle on its back, yet is unharmed and can even give a really good account of it all to her mommy.

I think toddlers would do well to wear these life vests around the house more often!
