Police Field Trip

On Friday, two police officers visited our homeschooling group for one of their standard community awareness events. The officers talked to the kids about community and home safety, and were both informative and jovial. Then we all trooped outside and the children got to explore the car and even be handcuffed. The event was so great and I was reflecting that homeschooled children really do have a vast number of opportunities these days, just like children in institutional schools. I participate in only a tiny fraction of the opportunities that come to my awareness. There are endless sports and academic classes available and marketed to homeschoolers. It's just so great and I feel like our family gets the best of all worlds with our schooling choice!

Mary got to turn on the siren

I hope this is the only time we see her behind bars!

Our little Ferdinand: John had a perfectly fun and boyish time at the police car, but while all the other children remained boisterous and involved till the end, John finished and ran off (happily) to look for inch worms by himself, far away from the crowd, and that is where he remained.

Joseph took it all in stride.

It is a good practice and convenient when we're at church for our co-op events to stop in and say hello to Jesus. As I read in a reflection recently--by Archbishop Fulton Sheen, I think--if we were walking past our dearest friend's home and his door was ajar, wouldn't we pop in and say 'hello', ever so briefly at least? Well, why do we walk past the church and fail to visit Jesus, who remains alone in the Blessed Sacrament?
