School of Ants

On March 29, with the warm spring weather and our noticing ants in the yard again, we laid cookie bait out to catch some ants for the School of Ants, which is a citizen scientist-driven study of the ants that live in urban areas.

We laid one bait station in a green area . . .

 . . . and one in a concrete area.

Then we froze to death our two captured ants, life got busy, then life got crazy, and I didn't remember to mail the ant specimins to North Carolina State University until yesterday. Soon I hope we can click on the country's map and see a link to our ant collection and an identification of the species!
