Getting to Know the Turtle

We are learning to care for our new box turtle, who still awaits an official name. We've had some great submissions but, so far, John has moved only from Boxy to the slightly more odd Boxo.

I think we're falling in to a routine of giving him fresh water and feeding him as I'm chopping up food for our own dinner, which is during the heat of the late afternoon when he is most active.

 Eating a strawberry

Crawling into his shelter box we gave him so he'd have a feeling of extra security

We can even take him for (adult-supervised) walks in the yard for a change of scenery.

Speaking of feeding turtles and other dependent creatures, Margaret is so cute eating with her utensils. She much prefers to feed herself, so she hands me the fork, I stab the food, and I lay the fork on her tray, then she picks it up and feeds herself daintily (almost always with her right hand, not like in the picture).
[Revised caption from husband :-)] After a fun day of playing with the turtle ... we cooked him and fed him to Margaret, our 1 year old toddler.   Yummm.
