I was working in the kitchen when John approached, "Mama, I have to ask you a question. I'd like to pray a decade" [of the rosary]. I replied, "Oh, I'd love to pray the rosary with you. Let me finish cooking and then I can join you."
"No, Mama! I want to pray by myself."
I should have known! John has always been shy about praying corporately and has preferred to pray alone (so I'll stumble upon him praying in a quiet corner). He needed me to get down the basket of rosaries from the mantle, which I did.
I'm sure it was a little invasive of me, but I took a photo of him and some short video (but he knew I was filming, so he was flubbing his prayers, which he otherwise knows).
Mary also likes to pray alone, although she isn't shy about praying in a group. The other day I heard her behind me in her car seat make the sign of the cross, then pray a list of requests that went something like, "Heavenly Father, I pray for Mrs. W--- who is getting a treatment, and for Daddy in his travels, and for Baby M---, and for Mama. Aaaaa-men. Mama, I prayed all by myself!"
