And Now, the Minute Clinic

When it rains, it pours!

I've been living by my daily to-do lists to get everything organized in time to leave for the weekend of funereal activities. We've been going to appointments, shopping for dark clothing, clearing our calendars, and doing all the things needed. John and I, in particular, have been sick for a couple of weeks.

Then today something about John's right eye kept nagging at me. It just looked funny. A few times he showed me little goobers that fell out of his eyes and I thought that was odd. As we were sitting down to dinner (so graciously brought to us by our neighbors!), I took one look at him and realized:

CONJUNCTIVITIS

It was 5:30 and I looked up the nearest Minute Clinic to see that it would close at 7:30. We scarfed down dinner and I zoomed us to the clinic. Alas, there were five people in line ahead of us and the clinic was no longer accepting any new patients before closing time.

By that time, John's right eye was weeping so much it was almost crusted shut, his left eye was starting to show symptoms, and he was crying from the pain.

I brought him home, gave him a dose of Tylenol, and tried to calm him down because he's quite scared about his eyes now. And I expect we'll be back at the Minute Clinic when it opens at 8:30.

The one other time we got conjunctivitis as a family, both children and I caught it. (Why does Chris so rarely get our illnesses?!)

And we're supposed to be on the road by mid-morning tomorrow. As I said, when it rains, it pours . . . .

  1. Do you still have the medicine leftover from the last time? I do hope it will clear up and the rest of you don't come down with it, but I know how things like conjunctivitis like to spread in families especially where little ones cannot keep their own hands clean. My own husband was not allowed back into work (hospital)for over a week when we last all caught it; they couldn't risk him infecting the entire pharmacy or other areas of the hospital.

Be safe if you travel today. Prayers for your family and for your brother in law. May he rest in peace.

  2. I know it might be unlikely at 30+ weeks pregnant, but if you can express some milk or colostrum, it's supposed to work wonders for conjunctivitis! I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law. Prayers and a hug!

  4. Thanks, everyone!

Update: John was seen at Minute Clinic this morning, diagnosed with likely bacterial (not viral) conjunctivitis, and given antibiotic eye drops, 3x daily for 7 days. The first 24 hours are the most contagious, apparently. So, weighing all factors, we're all going to Atlanta and I will keep the kids at the hotel, away from the various events, until the funeral Mass Friday at noon, by which time John will have passed 24 hours and had five doses of antibiotics.
