Discriminating Ears

Why is it that when I'm cooking dinner, bustling around, opening and closing cupboards, refrigerator, and food containers, no child comes running in to help?

But the moment I sneak out a cracker and peanut butter because I'm so hungry and need to sustain myself, the little ones hear the crinkling paper and come screaming, "I'm hungry! I want a cracker!"?

  1. As they get older, the moment you drop your voice to a whisper so they cannot hear what you are saying, that is the moment they perk up their interest. However, when you are screaming their name, trying to locate them for a chore, well I'll be... suddenly they are stone deaf!!! Or perhaps their ears are already fine tuned to that as well?
