Little Adventurer

In 3-3/4 years of parenting, I think this is the first time a child has drawn on my walls. (My friend Sarah is laughing at me now.) I heard a "quiet" take over, then a scratch scratch scratch from the other room. I called out, "Mary? Are you drawing?" She answered, "On the wall!" Then for the next few minutes after I scolded her, she toddled around the house telling me, "I draw on wall! I draw on wall!"

This is a place where I find Mary on a somewhat regular basis. Twenty-one months old and you'll note she's as high as the top of the door frame. I don't have any grey hairs yet, but I think it's only a matter of time.

  1. Oh boy. Mary's stair feat is exactly how Theo got his first shiner last week! Good luck, Mama!

  2. uh... .... oh my goodness on the Mary climbing the stairs thing! Andrew is 18 months, so not that far behind her and i think I may have a heart attack if he ever did anything like that!

  3. Ah Mary. Love her. :)
However, I suspect you will never be like me and just give up on banishing the wall writing, though.
I must say since Dave primed all the walls in June we have had only a sparse amount of recidivism which was easily remedied with some Magic Eraser (of which I had preemptively bought a 24 case). So far we've only needed one... crossing fingers... ha ha

  4. It's good that your bannister doesn't go all the way up over the door the way mine does. It was a little scary when I found my older child up there!

  5. I honestly cannot believe it took this long for you to have writing on your walls!!! :) I LOVE washable crayons and markers...

Mary cracks me up! What a fantastic little spirit she has. She reminds me so much of a little curly red-haired girl I know. ;)

  6. Janeane: I am really conservative about all writing implements. Upstairs there are writing implements in a can on top of the tall bedroom bureau and in my locked desk drawer and that is it. Downstairs, there are writing implements in Daddy's office and in a can on top of the refrigerator and that's it. Literally, there is not one stray pen allowed to be anywhere. The children's washable crayons and markers have heretofore been up high on the crafting shelves and are now in drawers in the locked pantry. And I sit with the kids when they're coloring and I don't leave the room. I don't know how long I can keep up this level of supervision, but that's how I haven't had writing on the walls until now!

  7. K - that is exactly what I didn't do and really couldn't... but come to think of it, I did it a lot better for a little while (when we first moved into a new apartment and the kids were 4 and under). Then the girls started doing more school type work and it became impossible for me to just limit their writing implement time to when I could supervise. Hence the child-deco look of our current and last place :)

  8. Sarah Faith: I really do understand. Even now, John is nearing four and I'll find that, say he's wrapped up in an art project and it's time for Mary to nap. Well, I'll admonish him to be careful and I'll take Mary upstairs to nurse her asleep. I'm leaving him alone with writing implements. Who knows what he'll do? So far, he's been very responsible, but it could be the kid in particular, that there's only one of him, he doesn't have a partner in crime yet.
