What Am I In For?
Anyone who has spent time with Mary remarks on what a climber she is, seemingly fearless, very physically adept, and when she gets hurt she doesn't often cry or cry much. I just don't know what I'm in for! Last night we were in the den and I watched for long minutes while Mary entertained herself by (1) standing on the sofa-chair and leaping to the ground below (18"?), landing purposefully on her bottom on the floor and (2) doing somersaults starting on the sofa-chair so she'd have an extra far way to fall (to the floor below) because a regular somersault must not be exciting enough.

You've met Emma, right? ;)
ReplyDeleteYou might find it worthwhile to get one of those plastic rock climbing walls and put it somewhere in or on the outside of your house somewhere she can't fall too hard.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe put up a ladder (2x4's hammered directly into a trunk) on a tree in your yard that might be good for climbing? When you have a child with that much climbing energy you really need to give them an outlet for it, as there are so many things NOT ok to climb. It would be sad to frustrate such agility and curiosity.
You're a better mama than I am. I'm always telling my kids not to do things like that. "That's not how a sofa is used..." "You might get hurt..." blah blah blah :)
ReplyDeletePaul is totally a climber. We just let him. He knew/knows his limits. If he was near an edge or something harmful we'd remind him of the object. He would either get down and move the object so he could climb and jump again, or climb/jump someplace else. I think it's fun to watch their minds work, and see what they can come up with :).
ReplyDeleteI've gone through stages. At one point I realized that I wasn't up for the battle to keep Mary from climbing. She's a serious climber! So I stopped trying. But recently I went through another development of letting her determine her own limits more. It really helps that she is so tough that she doesn't cry much. I look at something and decide if she falls, is she really going to get an injury? If a real injury, then I stop her, but, if not, then I let her.
ReplyDeleteSarah: I love your idea of 2x4"s hammered onto a tree. Or even a tree house someday!
