Per request, I've been trying to catch Mary on video snorting her 'yes.' It is quite difficult because she is so rapidly replacing her snort-snort 'yes' with nodding. Below are some everyday videos of Mary at 17 months old.
Here I was asking Mary some yes/no questions about her snack in hopes that she'd snort, which she didn't do.
In the middle of this video, Mary does snort-yes one time, and you also get to see an example of her initiating the game of pat-pat-pat the baby doll.
More pat-pat-patting of the baby.
Oh my. John sounds like Liam when he corrects you, "No that's not toast, that's bread". That's that perfectionism I was telling you about...
ReplyDeleteBut anyway, Mary is TOO cute. This is such a cute age. I did hear the snort- right around when she was pat-patting Noah, right? Over here we do "LOVE the baby, HUG the baby, KISS the baby". Same game ;)
Elaine: Is that not a typical correction for kids? Those kind of perfectionist corrections are regularly flowing from John, but he's my firstborn, so I don't know the difference! The other day another mom was lamenting on a list I'm on about how her child is always making fine differences. The mother had corrected the child for picking at (damaging) her church dress and the child replied, "It's not the dress, it is the tassle" (some kind of tassles on the fringe of the dress). Anyway, it will be funny for me to see if other children don't have such "fine distinction" that expresses itself with irritating corrections. I suppose it is something to be honed. That discernment of fine differences is what makes many good professions, such as my being an editor. Till the day I day, I will feel a note of irritation when at the grocery store and I see the sign for the express line: "10 items or less."
ReplyDeleteElaine: The other thing about the pat-the-baby game is that Mary will pat-pat-pat just about any kind of creature. John was given some plastic figurines of ferocious-looking bears standing on their hind legs roaring. Yesterday I saw Mary pick one up, cradle it to her heart, and pat-pat-pat the bear.
