Reece's Rainbow is one of my favorite charities. A regular old housewife, mom to Reece, founded an organization (not an adoption agency) to help facilitate international adoptions of babies with Down Syndrome. On the domestic front, about 90% of babies diagnosed prenatally with probable Down Syndrome are killed in utero--usually at 20 to 23 weeks, which is sometimes a viable age with today's technology. For those few who carry to term but place their babies with Down Syndrome for adoption, there is a domestic adoption agency and a list of about 200 American families wishing to adopt those babies. There are many more children born with Down Syndrome internationally because those countries do not have as much access to ultrasound--then those babies are placed for adoption because there is no place for disabled people in the societies in which they live.
In only three years, Reece's mom has found permanent homes for 225 children and disbursed more than $350,000 to help families fund those adoptions!
Below is a video about Reece's Rainbow:
Reece's Rainbow is having its major annual fundraiser, which allows people to buy a Christmas ornament for $35. The porcelain ornament will have a photo of one's sponsored child on it. There are a tremendous number of parents who want to adopt children with Down Syndrome from international countries, but are unable to do so because it costs $15,000-40,000. This fundraiser goes straight toward the adoption fees for these children, thus helping them be matched with their forever families sooner!
Thank you for sharing. The video made my cry, and the article about how many families want to adopt these children melted my heart.
