Some of my blog readers might be interested in watching EWTN's "Life on the Rock" this Thursday night (September 10) for an interview of Fr. Vander Woude. This marks the one-year anniversary since Father's own dad, Thomas Vander Woude, died saving his youngest son and Father's brother, Joseph. Joseph is the seventh son and has Down Syndrome: when he fell into the family's septic tank, his father jumped into the sewage and stayed underneath it, holding his son above in the air until help arrived and giving his life in the process. That heroic, Catholic father saved Joseph's life twice: first when he did not abort him (unlike about 95% of American babies diagnosed prenatally with Down Syndrome) and second when he fell into the septic tank. Read an article here.
My readers might also appreciate watching this nine-minute news piece from a Dallas, Texas, affiliate. This couple chose not to abort their first child Thomas, diagnosed prenatally with Trisomy 13, which is always fatal. They opened up their lives to journalists to follow their journey through the end of pregnancy and the five glorious days their son lived, when he got to be loved and to enrich his parents' lives forever. Be forewarned that this is a real tear-jerker and women who are especially sensitive (my pregnant mom friends!) might not be up for it.
