Latest Domestic Experiment

Very economic (about five cents per load instead of 30 cents per load). Fast and easy. Effective? The experiment will tell!

  1. Oh! Please keep us posted! I've thought about trying that, but hear mixed reviews...

  2. Is this the dry version? I tried one using basically the same ingredients except it was a liquid form. I was not happy with the condition of my whites which became very gray. :-(

I did not use the Fels Naptha because I heard it didn't matter which bar soap you use. Since we have sensitive skin here, I went with the dove that we normally use. Maybe Fels works better, but it has pretty harsh chemicals in it from what I understand.

OTOH, I have been making my own dishwasher detergent---equal parts Trader Joes detergent, borax, and washing soda. I've been extremely pleased with that, but I haven't done the math.

  3. this is the recipe i use too [not sure if you saw my post] - i've made 2 batches thus far. i still use my oxi-clean w/every load and vinegar for softener.

mine sits in a huge ugly orange HomeDepot bucket in the laundry room... gotta do something about that! [charlie got into it a couple wks back and literally *threw* half cups of the det. all over my laundry room! Ugh!! - out of my line of sight for 3 mins. or less... how *do* they do that!!!! LOL]

  4. Do you have a front loader washer? I have been trying to find a recipe for homemade laundry soap that doesn't turn my HE washer into a bubble bath.

  5. Modest Mama - this soap doesn't bubble. I have a front loader as well.

  6. Yes, this is the dry version. I do not have a front-load washer. I've heard that greying can occur especially in hard water, so if that happens I'll have to experiment further.
