Fire Station Grand Opening

For months while attending my La Leche League meetings, I've noticed a fire station being constructed across the street. At last week's meeting, I saw a big sign announcing the grand opening on the coming Saturday. I thought maybe there would be some real firemen handing out balloons and that John might like it. Little did I know what a big event it would be! There were at least 100 people in the hour we were there. We enjoyed a free cookout, cake, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

We were allowed free reign in the new trucks and every room of the fire house.

John brought his own fireman's hat (which he received from Pop-Pops!).

The kids each received fireman's badge stickers.

Inside the cab of the truck.

My favorite photo. As much as I expect of John, I am reminded that he's still such a baby!

Inside the rear compartment (I don't know it's official name) of the truck.

Meeting a real fireman. I had tears of laughter in my eyes when I felt compelled to tell the fireman about how three firemen rescued me after I locked myself out of the house with three-week-old John inside and Chris away on his first business trip since I'd had the baby. I was so embarrassed when the firetruck came charging down our cul-de-sac, sirens blaring, and I was doubly chagrined when all the firemen had to do was run a credit card through the lock to open the door. The fireman told me they do just such "rescues" all the time.

Each fireman had a great cubicle with a twin mattress, a desk, a chair, and shelving. Gone are the completely open sleeping quarters.

The exercise room.

A fireman posed John and took a series of photos of him.

John met two dachshunds and a real dalmatian at the event.

He also met a pretend dalmatian. I noticed that all the other kids gathered around the character with smiles on their faces but John was cautiously reserved and wanted me to hold him. In fact, he was somber for the entire event, even as he was running around to see everything. A fire house is serious business!

  3. Love the sling :-) So when you go out does everyone look at you and ask you what it is and where they can get one. Whenever I wear my sling out in public I get questioned and stared at by a zillion women...I feel like some sort of celebrity or something (laugh) ;-)

  4. I am always amazed at how many women question Katherine on her sling. There are even some women who ask "why do carry your baby in that?" I tell Katherine to just tell them ... "becuase the baby can't walk yet on her own."

I just thought that would have been obvious.
