Birthday Baking

Hey, I thought Katherine already gave birth about three months ago?
Mary was asleep in the Ergo while I was baking my birthday cake on Monday. I was getting flour all over my Ergo, so I wore an apron over it. Since I wear Mary so often, I think that she hasn't gone very far: I gave birth to her, but she just moved from the inside to the outside! (I guess it's the whole fourth trimester concept . . .)

Sadly, my attempt at pound cake looked beautiful and had good flavor, but was very dry. Even John refused to eat it and threw it on the ground after he took a taste. Nothing like a two-year-old to give an honest opinion. Chris and I did discover one way to make the cake more edible: toast it and drizzle with melted butter. You know, because there isn't enough butter already in pound cake.

  1. Katherine,

Can you post a pic of how you tuck little Mary in the Ergo? I have a...ohh what is the name of it...it is like an Ergo (in that it can be worn front or back) but it simpler (just a big square of fabric with long straps) and it is the only carrier I have other than the Bjorn. I know how to put an older baby in it comfortably, but how do you snuggle a little one in there?
    Thanks
    Jamie

  2. Jamie:

I might post a picture to the blog, but to answer your question more quickly . . .

Go to the Ergo website and click on "front carry position" to see the video demonstration.

Mary is still so young, some people would use an infant insert, but I don't own one and don't think I want one. I figure that the soft fabric wraps are better for infants (e.g., Maya, Moby), so if an infant can't fit in a more structured carrier, like an Ergo, then it probably wouldn't be comfortable for the baby anyway.

But Mary is pretty big for 11 weeks and I tried her in the Ergo the other day. The only thing is that her body is still small enough that it would be uncomfortable for her legs to be splayed wide like that. The website describes that for "tweener" babies like her, I can either tuck both her legs inside (like a little frog), or tuck one leg in, and leave one leg hanging out. I've done both and they work well.

I think you have a mei tei carrier, from what you said. Here are instructions for using the mei tei with little babies:

Ooo, looking at those websites makes me want (again) to buy a mei tei. It looks like such a great, versatile carrier. Really superior. I'm sure my husband would just looooove me to buy another carrier!

  3. Happy birthday!!! Mmm...pound cake sounds SO good, even if it was dry! I had to laugh at John showing his obvious distaste for it. I tried to feed Theo some pureed carrots and pinto beans yesterday (separately), and he made quite a show of spitting them all over me and then gasping dramatically, as if I were trying to poison him. You gotta love a kid who knows his own mind, eh? So much fun!

  4. Happy Birthday!

Leo was also a big baby, and I began using the Ergo around 3 months without the infant insert...the same way you described.

I have the same apron in blue ;-)

  5. Dry Poundcake: Add strawberries or blueberries or both, some pineapple, bananas if you want, cherries and sprinkle nuts and whpped cream! yummy! You can even crumble the cake for a trifle.

    Happy birthday again!

  6. That's so funny. I once went to an extended family funeral with two of my sisters who were both pregnant at the time. I was wearing Christina in a sling of some kind. Everyone was confusing me with one of the pregnant sisters! (Even though her little legs were sticking out!) It was pretty funny.

  7. I used a rolled up receiving blanket instead of an infant insert in the Ergo and it was great. I would fold up a receiving blanket to just wide enough to grab the sides on either side of the baby and then pick her up in it, and put her in a newborn cradle type hold (where her both feet were toward one side). It was comfy and secure for her pre-sitting up days. Later I used it underneath her bottom to give her a little lift so she could peek out.
