My boy enjoyed playing in the backyard today, but my photo shoot of boy-on-bench was interrupted when our family cat Nibbs walked by. (Such pointing is usually accompanied by repeated shouts of dee-dee!, which is his version of "kitty.")
John was so urgently excited that he got off the bench (with my help) and chased after Nibbs, cornering her against the sliding glass door, where she really wished somebody would let her inside.
Later we went to the park where John was vaguely enjoying the swing (not scared, but not excited either) when a neighborhood cat joined us and stole his attention. Moments later I naively let John try walking himself on the soft wood chips of the playground and he tripped and fell into a piece of play equipment, biting open his lip again!
My dad mailed John his very own birthday card to my mom's house. I showed it to John, then put it out of reach, at which John began crying. I was telling him no, he couldn't have it, when I realized that there really is no joy in Grandpa's sweet birthday card for a one-year-old if the baby can't play with it. So, I gave him the card. It has a bear on front with a big googlie eye for a nose, which John promptly pulled free (and mama just as promptly confiscated). John ran around with his card for 15 minutes, tore it in half, and tugged it every which way. In other words, he got a lot of joy out of it!
In the late afternoon, my sister and I visited Dad at his house. Here, Beezee is reading Maddie and John a book on his favorite subject: kitties!

ReplyDeleteI hope he didn't pick up on Emma's climbing skill! She's going to give her Mommy a heart attack soon now that there's nothing she won't climb!
