John Takes After Mama

At Chris' wise suggestion, we've removed the coffee table from the living room. This will result in fewer bonking of heads so Mama can retain more of her sanity.

Moments before this boring photo was taken, John was so deeply into his toy basket, that his tummy was his only point of contact. His arms and legs were flying free in the air, which was comical.

It seems that, although John looks just like his daddy, he does not sleep like his daddy. John is taking after me in that department, which means that he sleeps terribly. Last night he slept from 9:45 p.m. (which was a very late start to the night) until 1:45 a.m. This was fantastic as I can probably count on one hand how many times he has slept four hours in a row since birth. But then he spent the rest of the night tossing and turning and flopping and seeming generally distressed. I didn't get to sleep again until one more measly hour from 5:00 to 6:00 a.m.

John was clapping in his sleep, as clapping is what he is working on learning right now. In the past, he has always begun sleeping even worse than his normal bad sleep when he is learning a motor skill. Then he works on the motor skill in his sleep: he did this with rolling over, crawling, and pulling up. Poor guy wants to be asleep, so his eyes are shut, he's doing this new skill (e.g., crawling), and is mildly crying at the same time because he just can't be still. I am really going to be interested to see whether this personality trait continues into older life and he's a very active child. That will cause his sedentary, bookworm mama to have to make some changes for herself!

EDIT: The culprit was a tooth! I just discovered that John cut a tooth between yesterday and today--and not the tooth I thought he was cutting. He now has his upper right tooth. (Janeane, you were right!)

  1. Emma does the same thing! I can always tell when she's about to make a breakthrough, because she'll wake up numerous times at night! That, and new teeth, are the culprits. UGH! Wish I could say it gets better...
