John's New Sleeper

Yesterday I forgot to announce that for Father's Day, John decided to cut his first tooth! It is the lower left one. That means we were right to think for the last two weeks that John was teething.

Here you can see how far John migrated from his play mat to the diaper table then onto the wood floor of the kitchen where I was puttering:

John thought the wood was really fun, until he lightly bonked his head on it. Tears ensued.
What was much more fun than the wood floors were the VCR and DVDs!
I am excited to have completed my second sewing project! I sewed a sleep sack for John. My boy still requires a diaper change in the middle of the night, even with Huggies Overnights, and the less clothing I have to unsnap, the more I can keep him asleep during the procedure. Unfortunately, despite searching high and low, I cannot find any open sleep sacks in sizes larger than six months (John is wearing 12-month clothing). Therefore, I decided that if the marketplace couldn't meet my needs, then I'd sew the sleep sack I sought!
It is nigh impossible to find nursery knits (versus cotton prints), so I used a solid blue. I found a cute applique of a teddy bear to make the outfit cuter.
This time I used sew-on snaps but if I move into sewing children's clothing regularly, I will buy the pliers for applying snaps.
The sleeper is for a size a few pounds bigger than John currently is. The sleeves fit him well now, but I don't know if his sausage arms will fit in them when his body fits the gown better. I'm not sure why the gown was designed to be so darned long. If the elasticized bottom of the gown were not so laborious, I would chop off the bottom of the gown and re-do the bottom.

  1. Great job on the sleeper!!! I am very impressed. You are self-taught, correct?

Master John is such a precious baby boy!

  3. I am mostly a self-taught sewer. I took a course about five years ago in which we sewed one pair of pants over the course of eight weeks or so. Then I didn't sew a single thing until I was pregnant and my friend Sarah gave me a lesson in sewing a nursing cover. Then nothing again until last month when I sewed a skirt. I'm so basic that I still have to look up in the machine's manual how to add thread and change stitch settings.

    Thanks for the compliments!

  4. looks like you did a great job. i'm glad you found some nursery knits online. those stretch terry fabrics i saw on there are great for sleepers, too by the way.

try a kwik sew pattern next time. you will be much happier, i promise. there is a nice one that is a pullover (no snaps) and elastic casing on the bottom. don't know the number offhand, it might be 1772.
