Thanksgiving 2022

This year we spent Thanksgiving with Pop-Pops in Atlanta. It was our first attempt in our 16 years of traveling while the children were sleeping--and it was a success! We parents woke at 3:00 a.m., finished loading the vehicle, woke the children closer to 4:00 a.m., and then they all fell back asleep for almost three of the four-hour trip. It was blissfully quiet!

I think a good time was had by all the relatives getting to see each other again.

And this was my Facebook reminder on Thanksgiving at 5:00 a.m.:

Thank you to all the medical staff, particularly in critical care, who are waking up right now, getting ready to show up for 7:00 a.m. shift change! I am remembering Thanksgiving 2020 when Thomas was becoming deathly sick, and on Thanksgiving day itself his severe gastritis began. I sat vigil comforting him for 22 hours straight and the only food I ate was a slice of pumpkin pie because I could eat it with one hand while I held Thomas with the other. He was so sick that soon one vomiting session alone caused him to lose 20% of his body’s blood volume in one shot. On that day, the best of the best doctors, nurses, and support staff had sacrificed Thanksgiving with their own families to work and save patients like our son. Thank you for all you do.

  1. Is very moving that on this day you remembered and were grateful for others who supported you and your child as you held vigil with him. There is nothing more humanly beautiful than this. Thank you for the reminder.
