The Neglected Siblings of Cancer Kids

(Guest post by Chris copied from Facebook)

This month is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, so with these pictures I would like to highlight one of biggest hero's in this fight, which is the often forgotten and neglected siblings of cancer kids.

This first picture was snapped during a video call between Thomas and his brother John, and it requires some explanation.  The blurry part of the photo in the bottom right is Thomas's hand, which he is holding up near his own eye.  This was a long standing family joke in our house (stolen from the old comedy show, The Kids in the Hall), where we would line up our fingers in such a way, with someone else's head lined up between our finger and thumb and we would pretend to crush their head.

When Thomas was stuck in his hospital bed with limited motion, this was one of his favorite games.  He would get his siblings on a video call on his iPad and "crush all of their heads".  These siblings were so giving of their time.  They would play along and scream as their heads were being "crushed."

For these siblings, thanks to damnable Covid policies (I am not good at hiding my disdain for Covid policies), they were forced to endure cancer through a screen.  These siblings were struggling as well and their feelings were real.  Their parents were rarely home, and even when we were home, we were not "present".  Much of our focus this last year has been to overcome or compensate for this neglect.
