Visiting the PICU on Christmas Eve

Today our family took Christmas gifts to the PICU nurses at Levine's, which was going to be joy enough for us . . . but then we were invited to go up to PICU and see our old friends! When we got there, the Charge Nurse called staff on her hospital phone and I overheard that all she announced was, "Thomas Lauer is on the unit!" and she needed to give no reminders of who we were from ten months prior. Thomas's Room 19 was empty and I can promise you it was emotional for this Mama to stand inside the place of so many memories. I felt like I had one foot in the place of near death of last Christmas and one foot here and now, in a place of life at this Christmas: the veil between the two is so much thinner than we tend to think.
