Field Trip: Stowe Dairy Farm

We took a tour of Stowe Dairy Farm on Thursday and had a really great time. This farm has been in the Stowe family for nearly 100 years, and various historic buildings have been preserved and restored, thus giving us a glimpse of what the milking room looked like in one decade versus a milking room from another decade. We could see barns of all ages, silos from different time periods, and so forth.

Black Angus cattle

Margaret as the goat, Mary as the chicken

Joseph wanting to feed the fainting goats

Using Mary as an example of how a vet treats a sick cow

Joseph, the big helper

John learning how to milk

Churning butter

Eating the butter they just churned with crackers

We took a hay ride . . .

Then the children got to play games and eat lunch before we left.

They played a potato sack relay race. Joseph was so nervous that he left the line and wouldn't be with the other kids. Then at the last moment, he joined in and was the last child to hop the race!

  1. Looks like you had a glorious day! The dairy farm visit reminds me of some family friends who had a dairy farm for years. When they decided to phase out the dairy operation, their son pleaded, "Can't we keep just one cow for milking?" He detested the idea of having to drink store-bought milk. :)

  2. This looks like such a fun field trip! I love these sort of opportunities as homeschoolers!
