Home Hair Stylist

Yesterday one of my small, domestic dreams came true: I found a hairdresser who will come to my home instead of my going to her salon! I have been asking around, trying to find such a hairdresser for years.

Sure, as a single woman without children, I used to enjoy going to fancy salons for the full salon treatment. The music is pumping, the atmosphere is hip, the unctions put in my hair smell good. The whole experience takes a couple of hours plus drive time and costs and arm and a leg. But I simply don't have time for those kind of outings now as a homeschooling mother of four. Also, since I'm a weirdo who doesn't tend to separate from her babies for such outings till the baby is about 18 months old, that makes going to a salon very awkward: apparently those size 2, super cool hairstylists don't think my baby is a very fashionable accessory!

It also seemed like a big waste of money for me to go to a fancy salon for my simple long hair and straight cut, so I'd taken to patronizing the chain hairdressers, but I didn't much care for the experience, plus it still required planning to get me out of the house without the children. So I'd go far too long in between getting my hair trimmed.

. . . until I found out that the daughter of one of my parish friends is launching a business of doing home hair cuts! Her mom put out the word among her homeschooling mother friends and I think many of us are leaping at the opportunity.

Benefits:

Super flexible about timing: The morning of the appointment, I had to reschedule because an appointment had come up, so the woman simply said she'd come later in the afternoon.

Ease with managing my children: The children sat ten feet away from me watching a TV show. Chris didn't have to take off work to babysit them for me. Joseph was fussy, so I wore him on my front in the Ergo where he fell asleep: I bet they didn't teach that in hairdressing school! 'How to Cut a Woman's Hair While She Wears Her Baby: 101.'

Inexpensive: Having my hair and Mary's hair trimmed cost less than what I would normally pay just to have my hair trimmed. One might think one would pay extra to have the stylist come to one's own home, but I think the lower cost represents the stylist not having to rent a chair at a salon.

I told this stylist that she has a new client in me! If any of my local friends want to try her services, contact me privately and I will give you her phone number.

  1. Hi K! How great to have that service. I found a lady out of her home and I just bring the bunch along, the baby nurses while she shampoos, its worked out great! I miss you, hope you are well enough for art this week. xoxo

  2. Nice! I would do home hair service if they had such a thing here. However I still carve out time to go to the salon especially since my cut isn't simple any more.

  3. That is fantastic! Between the drive-thru grocery pick-up and home hair care, I'm considering a move south! ;-)
