Or not watching him, to be precise!
Turtle Watch 2012
Boxer has disappeared. Starting in mid-September, he stopped eating his food. I persisted in feeding him daily for three weeks out of fear that I'd starve a healthy turtle, but he did not nibble his food.
In the beginning of October, Boxer began to sit still. He picked a corner of his habitat and sat in leaves up to his neck, blinking at us and occasionally craning his neck to see us better. On cold days, I'd find him all the way tucked in to his shell. If the afternoon weather got warm enough, I'd find him with his legs and neck out, but not walking around.
When I searched for Boxer yesterday, I could not find him at all. I gingerly dug through the six-inch deep dry leaves in the 4'x4' enclosure, but could not find him. I think he has successfully dug into the soil to hibernate!
Either that or something dreadful has happened to him, so I guess we will find out in the spring. I read one blog that her outdoor boxer turtles in South Carolina, close to us, disappear in October and reappear in April.
